***image1***For more than five decades, the 86th Airlift Wing Airmen at Ramstein have been called to defend the founding ideals of American democracy. From Vietnam to Iraq, the 86th Airmen hold tight to a legacy of patriotism and commitment.

We continue to build a tradition of faithful service in defense of liberty’s freedoms; and as we observe Memorial Day, we remember the more than one million American lives that have been given in the protection of independence, the more than 140,000 who were prisoners of war and all who were declared missing in action. This is a day to honor our veterans for their dedication and their sacrifice.

This year we honor many heroes by observing the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. President Franklin Roosevelt described the service members from World War II as the “pride of our nation,” who struggled to preserve our civilization. The fallen from that war will always be remembered.

Today, all who wear the uniform of the United States are serving at another crucial period in history. We are answering a great call to serve our nation on the front lines of freedom. This year alone 86th Airmen have defended freedom fighting the global war on terrorism, delivered critical aid to Sudan, transported allied wounded home. We are upholding our heritage, keeping alive the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country. Your commitment to the ideals that embody America ensure their sacrifices were not in vain.

On this Memorial Day, we honor all of our fallen brothers and sisters and their commitment to our country. By giving their lives in the cause of freedom, these heroes have protected and inspired all of us to continue their legacy of patriotism and sacrifice through service.

We have asked a lot from you this year, and you have prevailed. You have continued that legacy of patriotism and sacrifice. And, I salute you. You continue to make America proud. God bless you and all you do every day in the defense of freedom.
