A military memorial service for Staff Sgt. Derek Farley was held Thursday at the Grafenwöhr Chapel in Grafenwöhr, Germany.
Sergeant Farley died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated as he attempted to disarm it Aug. 17 in Farah, Afghanistan.
Sergeant Farley was assigned to the 702nd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Grafenwöhr, Germany, on Jan. 9, 2008, and deployed to Afghanistan as a team leader Sept. 15, 2009.
Sergeant Farley was born May 21, 1986, in Nassau, N.Y., and is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Carrie Farley, and brother, Dylan Farley, from Nassau.
