***image1***The Department of Defense has created Military Saves as an encouragement for people to start and continue their future financial goals.
“It’s to motivate people to save and handle their money better,” said Roy Bolton, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern financial readiness program manager.
When people sign up for the free program, they answer questions on what and how they are trying to save for, such as retirement, education or buying a new home. How the program works is by periodically sending encouragement e-mails to members with hints on how to reach their financial goals, said Mr. Bolton.
To entice people to join the program, DOD held a Military Saves Campaign, “Build Wealth, Not Debt,” Feb. 26 to last Sunday.
Here in the KMC, Mr. Bolton sponsored information booths at four locations per day throughout the campaign. Helping him were representatives from the Community Bank, Service Credit Union, 8th Finance Battalion and 21st Theater Support Command’s Tax Assistance Centers.
“We are not here to get business; we are just here basically volunteering to try and encourage the military to try and save,” said Gwyn Johnson, Community Bank customer service representative.
More than 600 people in the KMC signed up for the program throughout the week-long campaign.
“Even if we get only 10 percent of the people who signed up to actually get into a savings mode, I think that will be a great success,” said Frances Graeber, Service Credit Union’s community financial education department manager.
Even though the campaign is over, people can still sign up for the program at www.militarysaves.org. For details, call Mr. Bolton at 489-6469 or 0631-536-6469.
