***image1***Spc. Vinnette Giscombe had been brainstorming for several weeks on how to make the Kaiserslautern Better Opportunities for Single Servicemembers even better when she took the reigns Thursday.
It’s quite a tall order. The U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s program was named “the best” in 2006 by Installation Management Command-Europe.
“I’ve looked into everything the BOSS program has done, and I’m looking forward to implementing other events and activities to make it even better,” said Giscombe, who has been involved in the program for the past year as a unit representative.
Specialist Giscombe will move from the Kaiserslautern Health Clinic on Kleber Kaserne to the USAGK to serve as KMC BOSS president for a year.
“She’s high speed and takes care of her Soldiers,” said Sgt. Joel Abelson, the former BOSS president, who was on the board that chose Specialist Giscombe to succeed him. “She volunteered with us the first weekend she was here and hasn’t stopped.”
Founded in 1989, BOSS is a three-pillared organization that helps single and unaccompanied Soldiers with recreation and leisure, community service and well-being issues. The BOSS program in most Army communities stands for Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, but because of the unique KMC demographics, the name was changed locally to “servicemembers” around 1997 to encourage Airmen here to take advantage of the same opportunities afforded to Soldiers.
BOSS meetings are held 1 p.m. the first and third Thursdays of the month in the garrison’s Headquarters, Headquarters Detachment training room, Bldg. 2929 on Pulaski Barracks. The BOSS office is located in Room 105, in Bldg. 2917 on Pulaski Barracks. For more information on the BOSS program, call Specialist Giscombe at 489-7239.
