As I took off from work last Friday to catch the usual afternoon
workout, I was just expecting to go through my normal routine – lift
some weights, do some sit-ups and maybe go for a half-hour of cardio.
Upon my arrival at the new Southside Fitness Center, my first visit
there, I instantly knew that I wouldn’t be going through my normal
routine.
The first thing that was different was parking. I was very pleased to
have a parking spot close to the gym, instead of walking a half mile to
get there.
As I entered the massive three-story structure, the first word that
came to my mind was “space.” I couldn’t believe the amount of open
space.
After receiving direction from one of the helpful services employees, I was on my way down to the locker rooms.
To the left, I looked down on a beautiful gymnasium that included nice
electronic scoreboards. To the right, I was awestruck by the
state-of-the-art weight lifting equipment.
Once I made my way to the locker room, I was again surprised by space.
The locker room was big enough to get lost in and had more than enough
lockers to go around – even on the busiest of days.
After getting my workout attire on, I felt like a kid in a candy store.
It seemed like there were a ton of things to do and I didn’t know where
to start. Walking back through the center, I took one more glance down
at the basketball courts and decided that I had to shoot some hoops.
It was nice to play on a court that wasn’t ridden with dead spots, and
not to mention the luxury of playing on a goal where the hoop was
actually facing
the foul line.
After shooting around for about 30 minutes, I felt like I was missing something if I didn’t move on.
I headed upstairs to the weight room. The new Life Fitness equipment in
there was unbelievable. It not only looked aerodynamic and cool; it
felt it when you were using it.
The feeling of tripping over people while in the weight room was gone, and I wasn’t anxious to have it back.
Only half of the weight machines were in use and there was no waiting
for a person to get done with their reps. I easily glided through a
weight lifting session without being held up or holding anyone up in
the process.
My third and final stop on the new fitness experience was upstairs to
the cardio room. And once again, I was not let down. There were a large
number of cardio machines and the room was big and bright. It was
definitely better than the feeling of being stuck down in the basement.
As I hopped on the treadmill, I was surprised to see a nice 17-inch
screen in front of me. A nice helping of MTV and Oprah really made my
run smooth and effortless. This also effectively puts the “I can’t work
out because my shows are on” excuse into extinction.
Before I knew it, I had run for a half-hour and was ready to pack it up
for the day. On my way out of the center, I felt refreshed and
definitely knew I would be coming back.
The new fitness center offers a fresh fitness experience to the KMC and no one will complain about that.
