***image1***The 14th car-free adventure day called “Car-free Lauter Valley” takes place Sunday. Walkers, hikers, bicyclists and inline-skaters will have a part of federal street B270 all to themselves.

Between Kaiserslautern and Lauterecken, B270 will close to motorized traffic, horse carriages and horseback riders from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The 35-kilometer route winds through the Lauter Valley from Kaiserslautern on to Otterbach, Sambach, Katzweiler, Hirschhorn, Olsbrücken, Kreimbach-Kaulbach, Rutsweiler, Wolfstein, Oberweiler-Tiefenbach and Lohnweiler to Lauterecken. 

More than 45 associations, institutions and communities will provide an entertaining program and food and drink locations.

In Kaiserslautern, the road closure starts at the “Gate to the Lauter Valley,” which is at the Krökelsche Quarry on Lauterstrasse, across from the train station at the garden fair area.

Down the road on the left, the city’s sewage plant and the water treatment works across from it will offer guided tours all day long.

Participants can make a stop at the train station in Otterbach, where the tourist office of the county of Kaiserslautern will provide information about the area. Two food stands will offer a variety of culinary specialties including fish in beer batter, smoked and baked trout, salads, crêpes, cakes and more.

First aid for people and bikes will be available on the area of the Reservists Comradeship Otterbach at the end of the village going to Sambach. The comradeship will offer pea soup and musical entertainment.

At Sembach’s bus stop, cold beverages and energy drinks will be served.

In Katzweiler, the official opening of the event will take place at 10 a.m. A mobile crane will be set up on the fairgrounds offering bucket rides. Hungry event participants will have the choice of fish, game, schwenksteaks, chicken, doner, Turkish pizza, bratwurst, waffles and cakes. A drive-in worship service will be at 2 and 4 p.m. in the church yard. Arts and crafts displays will present mineral fossils, stone necklaces, doll clothes and bags.

In Hirschhorn, gyros, weizenbeer and other beverages will be served.

A bike repair station will be set up in Sulzbachtal.

The radio station, Antenne Kaiserslautern, can be found in the Olsbrücken school yard. A local massage office will offer leg massages and goulash soup. The Protestant parish will conduct an open-air worship service at 10:30 a.m. and will provide information on youth work and boy and girl scouts. In Haupstrasse 61, bikers can visit an “open garden” to learn about house and garden accessories and try Mediterranean food specialties.

A gyros station and cocktail bar will be set up on the sports field in Kreimbach-

Kaulbach.

In Rutsweiler, guided tours of the twin church will be offered at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. The tours are 45 minutes long. The local carnival association will offer live music, food and beverages.

In Wolfstein, people can get a ride into the lime mine and listen to experts’ explanations. In town, there will be a music band, disc jockey, children’s fun and a variety of culinary specialties.

Free rides on a merry-go-round will be offered on the festgrounds in the next village, Oberweiler-Tiefenbach. Local firefighters will  put up a salad bar and serve grilled specialties.

The square dance group, Glan Valley Jumpers, will perform on the parking lot between Reckweilerhof and Heinzenhausen.

A carnival with rides, activity booths and brass music will lure visitors to the community hall in Heinzenhausen.

In Lohnweiler, the longest salad and cake bar of the Lauter Valley will be set up on the soccer field.

Lauterecken is the north end of the road closure. Local clubs will offer a variety of food including Thüringer bratwurst, fish specialties, schnitzel sandwiches and homemade cakes.

Event participants can board the Lautertal train to get back to their starting location. The trains will travel between Kaiserslautern and Lauterecken. Train staff will be available to help to load and unload bicycles. The transportation of bicycles is free.
