Sirens blared and emergency responders scurried to the scene of a truck
bomb that exploded Tuesday near Bldg. 500 during a base-wide emergency
management exercise.

The three and a half hour exercise included 10 dead and 10 injured, of
which eight were moulaged –“victims” wore gruesome makeup to appear as
though they had sustained injuries – giving first responders a more
realistic scenario.

“This exercise gave Team Ramstein yet another opportunity to shine,”
said Lt. Col. Kurt Raffetto, 86th Airlift Wing chief of readiness and
inspections.
“Everyone showcased their skills, responding swiftly and accurately to the exercise scenario.”

Team Ramstein is required by Air Force Instruction to complete eight
emergency management exercises each year, said Tech. Sgt. Thomas
Woodie, 435th Air Base Wing NCOIC of wing readiness and
inspections.  Tuesday’s exercise met two of the annual
requirements to include weapons of mass destruction and a major
accident response exercise.
