Are you transitioning from the military to the civilian life and workforce? Are you ready?
The idea of leaving the military and starting a completely new chapter in your life can be very complex, confusing and stressful. With the right information and adequate planning, however, this transition can also be very exciting.
Your first stop in the transition process is to attend pre-separation counseling. Not only is it Congressionally mandated that all service members receive this counseling (not less than 90 days prior to discharge), it is also provided to ensure you are aware of all the benefits and services available to you. The briefing also motivates you to begin thinking about the many work and family life issues you and your family should consider before departing active duty.
During the counseling, you will use a checklist and be guided through a variety of topics, including employment assistance, education and training, health and life insurance, finances, and veteran’s benefits. You will be presented with available resources and information that provide you with options and help you make informed decisions about the choices for you and your family.
Pre-separation counseling sessions are available every Thursday at 1 p.m. through the Ramstein Airmen & Family Readiness Center. If you are within 24 months of retirement or 12 months of separating from the military, now is the time for you and your spouse to attend this briefing.
If you are possibly being separated or retired because you have been selected for Force Shaping programs, pending legal actions, having trouble passing your physical fitness test, or have been referred to the medical board, now is the time to attend this briefing. There are many areas to consider and much information to absorb. You need time to plan and decide what is in the best interest for you and your family.
The A&FRC is committed to helping Airmen and their families prepare for the transition to civilian life.
