Three Ramstein dependents received scholarships from the Ramstein Company Grade Officers’ Club June 9.
Capt. Lewis Sorvillo, U.S. Air Forces in Europe force management officer presented checks to Amanda Maier for $2,000, Daniel Langholz for $1,000 and Sophia Seawell for $500 during Ramstein American High School’s Award Night.
The students were picked to receive the scholarships after a committee chaired by 2nd Lt. Miranda Her-nandez, 1st Combat Comm-unications Squadron, looked at the total-person concept. The committee evaluated the applicants on their high school accomplishments, leadership experience, involvement in sports and other academic organizations. They also had to complete an essay component.
“We believe education is key to a successful future, and we wanted to recognize the academic accomplishments of some of the graduating class,” said 1st Lt. Kelly Guth, 700th Contracting Squadron contracts manager and KMC CGOC vice president. “We are very proud of all the recent graduates and wanted to offer our financial support.”
To be able to award the more than $3,000 worth of scholarships, the CGOC raises money through annual fundraisers like the CGOC Golf Tournament and the yearly Ramstein Bazaar.
“We enjoy raising money for our scholarship committee and would like to continue making contributions to programs that support education,” said Capt. Shayne Aune, KMC CGOC president.
The CGOC hopes to expand its scholarship program to include Community College of the Air Force graduates or enlisted members pursuing a bachelor’s with an award similar to the Pitsenbarger to help offset the cost of books.
Additionally, the CGOC also makes donations for the CCAF graduation ceremonies.
