The Royals started the season with a bang, defeating Stuttgart in a long match Saturday on the Ramstein campus. The Royals won all the girls’ points, 9-0, and won 5-4 in the boys’ competition.
Kate Sankey played a three-set singles match and won against Stuttgart’s Casey Stophel 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Sankey and Ashlyn O’Connor teamed for a 7-6, 6-0 win in doubles, too. For the Ramstein girls, singles wins were scored by O’Connor, Alex Pinkham, Mercedez Shelton, Maddi Svan, and Lydia Woodfork.
Other doubles pairings that won for Ramstein included Pinkham/Shelton (8-5) and Svan/Woodfork (8-1) to showcase some of the Royals’ younger players who are already productive. Most of the participants competed with an eight-game Pro Set format, while a few used traditional set play to determine winners.
Boys’ singles wins were claimed by Jordan Liebig, Colin Kent, and Collin Ritter. In boys’ doubles, Liebig and Kent had a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win versus the tandem of Charles Griffin and Colin Roedl from SHS. Connor Sankey and Ritter won a doubles point for the Royals, too, to fuel the tight Royals team win.
