Last weekend, the Ramstein Rams Men’s Soccer Team won the Meissenheim Invitational, played near Strasbourg. The team was invited to play against four local clubs, and took the crown after all teams played against each other.
Ramstein won its first game 1-0 against the home team, FSV Meissenheim. Jeff Fotakis scored the only goal on a breakaway pass, beating an outstretched goalie to put the ball in the back of the net.
Things didn’t go as well in the second game, as Ramstein could not capitalize on an early chance to score against Ichenheim. Ichenheim scored two goals in a short period of time, winning 2-0 even though the USAF players continued to put pressure on the opposing goal.
The Rams were able to bounce back by defeating Kappel 1-0 thanks to a goal by José Macias.
Needing to win their final game against Kurzel in order to place first and win the tournament, the Rams took the initiative and never let up. On a free kick, José Morales put a beautiful ball inside the box to Macias, who executed a diving header to beat the opposing defense. Six minutes later Kurzel tied the score. Luckily for the Rams, the José duo put the team ahead for good a minute later. Again on a set play, Morales served the ball to Macias for a running header that sealed the victory and the championship for the base team
The team donated its winnings to a local charity and participated in a local ceremony celebrating the close ties between the American and German communities. This was followed by a party in honor of the Ramstein guests.
The Rams are preparing for the USAFE championship in the fall by participating in tournaments and friendly games throughout the region. They practice Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the South Side Soccer field from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Players of all skill levels are invited to participate.
