Ongoing construction work around Autobahn A6’s Exit 13 is seriously impacting traffic to and from the Ramstein West Gate. The Ramstein-Miesenbach on- and off-ramp is blocked, affecting drivers traveling west on the autobahn. Detours have been set up.
• If you are traveling west on A6 (from the direction of Mannheim and Kaiserslautern) to the Ramstein West Gate, the normal exit is closed. Follow the “U3” signs, which will lead you back on A6 heading east so you can exit normally toward Ramstein Air Base.
• If you are traveling from the west gate to go west on A6 toward Saarbrücken: Upon exiting the west gate, go right in the traffic circle toward Ramstein-Miesenbach. Follow the signs pointing the way toward A62. When you reach A62, turn south to head toward Landstuhl and connect to A6.
• If you are traveling from the west gate to go east on A6 toward Mannheim, or if you are traveling east toward the air base from the direction of Saarbrücken, the construction will not affect you. Drive as you would normally.
The work blocking the A6 on- and off-ramp is expected to finish about Sept. 25. The entire project, which includes repaving the truck stop near the off-base Burger King, is expected to be completed by the end of October. An alternative route to and from the air base is via the Ramstein East Gate and A6 Exit 14 (Kaiserslautern-Einsiedlerhof). As an option to the East Gate during high traffic periods, POVs may also enter the LVIS Gate from 6 to 8 a.m. and exit from 3 to 6 p.m.
Note: When leaving the west gate, if you drive straight through the traffic circle, you will find a large sign in German directing you to follow the “U3” detour to go west on A6 toward Saarbrücken. This will eventually get you to the A62 connection, but it is not the shortest route.
