Editor’s Note: During the coming months, the KA will profile fitness centers in the KMC. Be sure to check the sports section regularly for the skinny on how to use local fitness centers to shape up.
The lowdown
Because of its location away from the Vogelweh/Ramstein corridor, Sembach is often-referred to as “the best-kept secret in the KMC.” According to Tech. Sgt. Terry Kasper, Sembach Fitness Center NCOIC, that designation applies to his facility, too. The fitness center staff uses a personal touch to create a family-friendly atmosphere. “We try to get out there and interact with the customers,” said Sergeant Kasper. Sembach’s amenities include three raquetball courts, a parent/child playroom and a gymnasium. The busiest times of the day are from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m., when squadrons do PT.
The gear
Sembach has nearly three dozen cardio training machines, including treadmills, elliptical trainers, stair climbers and one rowing machine. There are also a number of weight machines and a well-equipped free-weight room.
The activities
Yoga and aerobics classes are offered, and according to Sergeant Kasper, a circuit trainer is coming soon. One-on-one instructional training sessions are also available.
One must-know fact
The Sembach Fitness Center recently suffered a water line break and will be without showers, toilets or water fountains for an undetermined period of time. The staff has provided portable lavatories and water jugs, but plan on showering somewhere else.
