Soldier, NCO of the Year competition guidelines announced

The 2008 U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army Soldier of the Year and NCO of the Year competition is scheduled for Aug. 10 to 14 at the Joint Multinational Training Command in Grafenwöhr. All active, National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers attached or assigned to USAREUR are eligible to compete.

Eligible Soldiers can participate at the USAREUR level by first taking part in Soldier and NCO of the Quarter and Year competitions at their units and their USAREUR major subordinate commands. Those commands are V Corps, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, the Southern European Task Force and USAREUR separate organizations (encompassing all other units, such as the Joint Multinational Training Command, 1st Personnel Command and 7th Army Reserve Command). The four Soldiers and four NCOs who earn Soldier and NCO of the Year titles at those commands then compete for USAREUR-level honors.

The competition consists of a board appearance, an Army Physical Fitness Test, a written exam, an essay, weapons qualification, day and night land navigation, testing on all warrior tasks and drills, a foot march and a mystery task.

A memorandum of instruction outlining the requirements, events and task subjects for the 2008 competition can be found by visiting the USAREUR home page at www.hqusareur.army.mil and clicking the “Soldier and NCO of the Year” link.
