Tips for KMC children and parents for a great school year

***image4***It is almost that time − back to school. Many families are returning to the KMC after squeezing in one last summer vacation before the school buses hit the roads and children are back in class Monday.

As the KMC prepares to send kids back to school, I want to stress a few points.

Remember that KMC bases have different school bus rules than off base. When on a KMC base, be sure to stop for school buses. When driving off base, in accordance with German law drivers are not required to stop for school buses. Make sure that your children know about this difference so that they never cross the street in front of or behind the bus when off base.
Beyond bus safety, there are a few “must-dos” for children and parents during the back-to-school season:

– If your child wants to play any type of sport, a sport physical is required.
– All students must have their school supplies by the first day of school. For a complete list, visit www.eu.dodea.edu.
– Attend the school orientations to meet your child’s teachers and principal.
– Find out your child’s bus route to school.
– Be sure your child’s immunization records are up to date and complete.

To celebrate the start of the school year, all KMC families of E-4 and below are invited to the Rhine Ordnance Barracks dining facility Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for the Family Back to School Night. The Dragon’s Den will feature an all-you-can-eat soup and salad bar, appetizers, short order burgers and hot dogs, entrees and a slew of desserts. A standard meal is $3.65 and a discount meal is $3.15.
