KULTURNACHT (NIGHT OF CULTURE), AUG 27, 6–11 P.M. VARIOUS LOCATIONS, WEILERBACH

On the occasion of 50 years Union Community Weilerbach, the community invites you to the Kulturnacht. Don’t miss out on a long night of culture and history. Various museums and historical places of interest in various towns will open the doors for you. A shuttle bus will commute between the individual towns.

XXL – KERWE-COMEBACK (VILLAGE FEST), AUG 27–29 VILLAGE CENTER/MULTIPURPOSE HALL, SEMBACH

After a two-year pause, the Sembacher Musikverein and in conjunction with other clubs, is bringing the village back to life! The fest will officially open on Sat evening at 9.00 p.m. with musical entertainment. On Sunday there will be an ecumenical service, a “Frühschoppen” (early morning drink) and a musical performance by the kindergarten kids. A parade through the town will take place on Sun at 2 p.m. with a following Kerwe speech and further musical entertainment. A party band will get you into the swing on Monday evening at 6.30 p.m. Don’t miss out on this year’s highlight, the musical fireworks at 9.30 p.m. Sembach village cordially invites and highly encourages KMC members to join in the fun.

BACKFISCHFEST (CITY FESTIVAL), AUG 27–SEP 4  KISSELSWIESE/RHEINUFER, WORMS

The City of Worms is celebrating the comeback of its Backfischfest (fried fish fest). Young and old meet on the Kisselwiese along the Rhine River, the wine cellar and the “Gaadewirtschaft”. The mixture of wine and folks fest makes this festival stand out. There are modern and traditional rides, the scent of sweets and hearty dishes as well as a sip of wine from local wine makers create a unique atmosphere and draws visitors from afar.

DONNERSBERGER GENUSSMARKT (CULINARY MARKET), AUG 28, 11. A.M.–6 P.M. WEINGUT BREMER, BRÜCKENSTRASSE 2, ZELLERTAL-NIEFERNHEIM

Visit a special culinary market in the courtyard of a winery and try some local delights such as cherries, cakes, chutneys, jams and mustards as well as vinegars, oils, honey and chili products, pasta, liqueurs and spirits. Further delights include potatoes, fish, meat and sausages, cheese specialties, Mediterranean delicacies and spice mills. The products are all handmade from local producers. The offer also includes specialties such as wild boar sausage, vegan Tagine, zucchini fritters and Mousse au Chocolat.

SWINGING LAUTERN / BARBAROSSA FEST, SEP 1–3 PEDESTRIAN AREA, KAISERSLAUTERN

Downtown Kaiserslautern will turn into one large stage with musical entertainment, ranging from Rock, Blues, Jazz and Classic on stages throughout the walking area. A formation of the USAFE Band traditionally also performs during the three-day event. Food and beverages are available at various booths.

KÜRBISAUSSTELLUNG “WELT DER MUSIK” (PUMPKIN EXHIBITION), SEP 1–OCT 31 GARTENSCHAU, KAISERSLAUTERN

The premises of the Gartenschau will once again turn into a colorful and unique world of pumpkins. This year’s theme is “music of the world” and artist Pit Ruge formed 13 different figures of well-known musicians. Look forward to meeting Mozart, Elvis Presley, a ballerina or a gramophone, all made out of pumpkins and some up to 4.00 meters in height. In addition, about 40,000 pumpkins will be on display.

HIGHLANDER FESTIVAL, SEP 2–3 NANSTEIN CASTLE, LANDSTUHL

Enjoy an authentic Scottish atmosphere at Nanstein Castle during the 7th Sickingen Highland Festival. A selection of excellent bands and a spectacular complementary program will rock the castle walls.

TIME TRAVEL – THE EXPERIENCE OF HISTORY, SEP 3, 2 & 4 P.M. TOURIST OFFICE/HAUPTSTRASSE, OTTERBERG

Join in and be one of the first to experience mobile time travel, the first of its kind in Germany. Climb aboard the rustic horse-drawn covered wagon and experience a unique ride through Otterberg, which combines tradition and modern technology. With your Virtual Reality glasses you will step back into long forgotten time; from the time of the monastery in 1254 up to the city of the Walloons in 1615. Feel the wind in your face, the jerking of the wagon and hear the clip-clop of the horse’s hooves, and feel like you are actually alive in that time period. Then experience the Otterberg Abteil Kirche, the second largest sacral building in Rheinland-Pfalz, with its exciting history. Now no longer virtual, but in reality with its massive, yellow sandstones that have shaped the character of the almost 1,000 year old edifice. The tour is now being offered in English and further dates are available.

DISCOVERY TOUR IN ENGLISH, SEP 3, 11:15 A.M., CASIMIR SAAL (CITY HALL), KAISERSLAUTERN

The guided tour includes a visit inside the Casimir Saal, located just below the City Hall. It is approximately 1.5 hours and leads through the underground illinated tunnel with information and sound effects about the history of Kaiserslautern. A further tour will take place on Oct 8. The meeting point is the Tourist Information Office, next to Fruchthalle.

Step back into the times of the wild and glorious Vikings! Experience exciting games where ferocious men and women in traditional attire hurl stones, compete in tug-of-war or carry around the Viking chief. Jumping as you stand is also a favored discipline. Traditional food and drink and musical entertainment are also on offer.

OKTOBERFEST MUNICH, SEP 17–OCT 3, THERESIENWIESE/FAIRGROUNDS, MUNICH

After a two-year pause, the largest beer fest in the world kicks off for the 187th time. The official opening takes place on Sat, Sep 17 with the brewery parade and tapping of the keg. Enjoy a Mass (one liter) beer and Brathändl (grilled chicken) in the huge tents with Bavarian bands, waiters in traditional Lederhosen and Dirndls and lots of singing. Rides for adults and children, vendors and arts and crafts. Package bus and train tours are on offer, check out your local travel agencies.
