Thursday, Feb. 16. marks the beginning of the Karneval season in Germany. Thursday is referred to as “Altweiberfastnacht” (old wives’ Fastnacht), where witches steal the keys to the city hall and take over command for the weekend. There are celebrations throughout the weekend and the festival culminates on “Faschingsdienstag” (Shrove Tuesday), as Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.

The first concert in 2023 in the impressive Abteil Church will present a German requiem by Johannes Brahms. The traditional Lätare Parade, which takes place three Sundays prior to Easter will wind its way through the streets of Landau. The colorful parade will start in front of the city hall and end at the large market square. A Hansel thimble game (finger puppets) will be presented, followed by the burning of winter, including a snowman. This tradition is unique to the region along the Deutsche Weinstrasse (German wine road), so don’t miss out on this extraordinary event in Germany!
