SAMHAIN IM KELTENDORF, OCT. 31, 5 P.M.

The Celtic village in Steinbach will celebrate a Celtic Samhain festival with special events. Samhain, of Celtic origin is the early version of Halloween and was the beginning of the new year and also the winter. 2,000 years ago the Celts feasted, drank and celebrated to honor the occasion. At 5 P.M. the mighty gates of the reconstructed Celtic settlement at the foot of Donnersberg will open for visitors. Visitors can experience the village lit by bonfires and dive into an exciting and mystical program with roasted bread, a walk with torches beginning at 7 P.M. which leads to the ring of sculptures within the Celtic garden and tales of the origin of the celebration will be told. Straw dolls can be thrown into the fire so that good wishes for the coming year will go to fulfillment. The Irish Folk Band „Heebie Jeebies“ will offer live Irish music and traditional ballads starting at 8 P.M. Celtic stew and beverages won’t let you go hungry or thirsty into the „new“ year. GARTENSCHAU, KAISERSLAUTERN
The premises of the Gartenschau have once again turned into a colorful and unique world of pumpkins. This year’s theme is “music of the world” and the artist Pit Ruge formed 13 different figures of well-known musicians. Look forward to meeting Mozart, Elvis Presley, a ballerina or a gramophone, all made out of pumpkins and some up to 4.00 meters in height. In addition, about 40,000 pumpkins will be on display. PEDESTRIAN ZONE, KAISERSLAUTERN
On Sunday, downtown Kaiserslautern will turn into a Halloween spectacle for kids and families alike. The Breunigweiler witches and other creepy characters will play tricks, drums and trumpets will provide musical entertainment. Activities all around pumpkins are planned in front of Stiftskirche, where youngsters can compete in a pumpkin carving contest or try to win an award with the most original costume.

A visit to the Celtic village in Steinbach is like a fascinating journey into the mystical world of early inhabitants at Donnersberg. The small reconstructed village is more than a museum, you can actually experience the culture of the Celts. Venture into a journey of the people who inhabited Donnersberg more than 2,000 years ago. Dwellings with wooden posts and semi-timbered structures, wooden shingles and facades made of clay, give realistic insight to the lives and times of the Celts. Young and older visitors can become active and try out Celtic handcraft techniques such as felting, building arrows or creating beads out of clay. Every Saturday and on Oct. 31, the Holiday Park turns into a spooky paradise. Beautiful and scary horror attractions, such as Scare Zones and houses of horror await you at the fright nights. Further attractions such as the Monster Bar, a maze of horrors and fireworks are recommended for youngsters 16 and over. Younger guests can enjoy a “dinoween” event and discover dinosaurs roaming the park.

Enjoy a spooky day or evening at Legoland Park in Günzburg. Thoughout the month of October, there will be a special display with pumpkins, ghosts and goblins and rattling skeletons. The fairgrounds in Speyer will turn into a colorful fair. In addition to a number of exciting rides, there will be a wide selection of culinary delights to meet anyone’s taste. Enjoy family fun on the ferris wheel overlooking the city, ride an automatic scooter or let your blood run cold on one of the high speed rides. There will be games such as pitching balls, shooting arrows or fishing for surprise. The beer garden and food booths will be open and serve delicious desserts such as sweets, ice cream and crepes.

All stores and offices will be closed to observe the occasion in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Northrhine-Westpfalia, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The northern states of Niedersachesen, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen observe Reformation Day on Monday, Oct 31 as a public holiday.

The Turnverein Rodenbach (Athletic Association) can finally light its torches again and cordinally invites members of the KMC to join in the fun. Runners can enjoy a 7-km cross country track (asphalt) illuminated by more than 300 tours. Children are invited to join in the 1100 m track and a bambini run for children under 5, with a distance of 500 m, is also available. The torches on the track create a unique atmosphere and provide an extraordinary experience for every runner. Children will all be awarded a medal and have a very spectacular winners’ ceremony! For the children we do not focus on the competition, but the fun doing sports together and to feel the pride of achieving and the glory of getting a medal! The main run is more of a competitive run. DLV registered, chip-timing, 5 year age grouping, After the run, there is time and space to change and shower. The meeting area in the gym offers food and drinks and a place for some social interaction with other groups and runners. Overall, it is a great sports event and a unique experience that should not be missed! Challenge yourself, meet friendly like-minded people and have the satisfaction of a great run. CATHOLIC CHURCH SQUARE/TOWN CENTER, DAHN/PFALZ
As in other German towns, a special event will take place in honor of St. Martin. Shops will be open in the afternoon for early seasonable gift shopping. 60 vendors will offer their goods, you can win a seasoned and ready-to-cook St. Martin’s goose in a raffle. Some highlights of the event: Original circus elephants will show their skills and tricks, enjoy a gondola ride high above the rooftops and experience a grand view of the Wasgau region, and motorbike stuntman will deliver a breatktaking show. When it gets dark, enjoy a Glühwein or a hot dish in a cozy round with friends.

Nov. 11 marks the beginning of the Karneval season in Germany. Some cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz have colorful festivities and street events to kick off the season. The day is NOT a public holiday and all offices and stores are open for business.
ST. MARTIN’S DAY, NOV. 11
SOUTHERN GERMAN STATES
Nov. 11 is referred to as St. Martin’s Day, where parades with children carrying colorful (handmade) lanterns and bonfires take place in the individual towns. St. Martin may ride through individual villages on a white horse. KMC members/children are invited to build bright lanterns and join in the fun, check your local “Amtsblatt” for details in your individual village.
