Giving Soldiers time off to spend with their families is an important part of our military culture. Our current operations tempo, however, often prevents Soldiers from taking advantage of the old policy, which allowed them to leave work at 3 p.m. every Thursday. For this reason, I have changed U.S. Army, Europe policy on Soldier and Family Time.
The old policy has been replaced with one that gives as many Soldiers as possible the opportunity to spend time with their families. The new policy increases the number of training holidays so that Soldiers will have at least one four-day weekend every month.
As with any change, the change described above will take time for us to adjust. I ask leaders at all levels to support this new policy and ensure our Soldiers and their families understand the reason why we are doing this: to give Soldiers and their families more predictability when it comes to spending time together.
