A look at weekly KMC police blotters reveals many residents are victimized by having personal property stolen from their vehicles. During the past three months, 45 vehicle break-ins were reported to the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron. This statistic certainly warrants a closer look for our residents to determine what causes someone to be a victim.
Obviously, when a vehicle is left unsecure, a thief’s job is made much easier.
However, both secured and unsecured vehicles have been targeted with no statistically significant differences. Regardless of whether a vehicle is secured or unsecured, one common denominator exists – valuable items are left in plain sight in the vehicles that have been broken into. Ninety-two percent of reported break-ins involved vehicles where high-value items were left in plain sight.
The top five high-value items stolen:
• navigation systems
• iPods
• gas coupons
• cell phones
• wallets and purses
We offer these tips to help you protect your vehicle and your property:
• Lock your vehicle at all times
• Remove all high-value items from plain sight
• Park in a well-lit and well-traveled area
• Remove GPS units and GPS mounts from vehicle when not being used
• Park vehicle in a locked garage if available
We urge you to maintain situational awareness of your vehicle and property. Host nation and military police agencies work to make our environment more secure, but your help in following these simple tips can help make our community safer for everyone.
