The Air Force’s “fly, fight and win” mission is family business. Our Air Force recognized this by declaring August 2009 through July 2010 as the Year of the Air Force Family.
One way to reinforce this focus on our families is to highlight a couple of the
education benefits available to active-duty members and spouses.
Our Air Force has taken steps to help enlisted men and women in uniform improve their educational opportunities with programs like the Air University’s Associate-to-Baccalaureate Cooperative. This program connects Community College of the Air Force graduates with online bachelor’s degree programs.
Each year more than 600 Airmen at Ramstein take advantage of this education benefit – but there’s room for more.
Another program that is especially beneficial to families right here in Germany is the Gen. George S. Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Program. This program was established to provide assistance for spouses of active-duty Airmen who accompany members to overseas locations. The focus of the program is on degree or certificate completion to provide increased occupational opportunities for spouses. More than 700 spouses at Ramstein take advantage of this program each year. In addition to these two programs, there are many other educational benefits available for Airmen and their families ranging from the Post 9-11 GI Bill to a new Web-based tutoring program through the Department of Defense (www.tutor.com/military).
The Air Force is a family in every sense of the word. And this year’s focus reminds us all of how important our families are to mission accomplishment. Our families share a common purpose – the defense of our nation – and we must continue to seek out every opportunity to recognize their tremendous contribution to our fly, fight and win mission.
I encourage everyone to take full advantage of the education benefits offered to them by our great Air Force. By doing this you’ll not only better yourselves, but also your families and the Air Force as a whole.
As always thanks to you and your families for serving and hope to see you around the KMC.
